What it means
A pair of swallows, one each side of the chest, is the oldest layout for this design and comes straight from sailors' flash: the birds marked miles at sea, and a swallow meant land was close. Mirrored pairs were a way of wearing the idea twice and keeping the chest balanced.
The prison reading that grew up later in Britain and Australia is worth knowing about, because some people will still read a swallow that way. Most will read it as travel or coming home.
