Minimalist Tattoo Designs

The smallest thing that still says what you meant. A few clean lines, no shading, and enough space around it that the skin does half the work.

Every tattoo image on this site is a generated illustration. None of it is work by this artist and none of it records a client result.

Minimalist tattoo designs with meaning

A minimalist tattoo has so few lines that the meaning has to do more of the work. These ten carry one with a real source, and each says whether that source is old or recent, because a younger meaning is still a meaning. Like everything on this page they are design ideas, drawn to be changed.

  • A plain circle with eight straight rays spaced evenly around it.

    Sun

The sun on the Philippine flag has eight rays, one for each of the eight provinces that first took up arms against Spain in 1896. A plain eight-rayed sun reads as home to almost anyone who grew up here.

  • A sampaguita flower with five rounded petals on a short stem with two veined leaves, in black outline.

    Sampaguita

Home, and welcome. The sampaguita has been the national flower of the Philippines since 1934, and it is strung into garlands for guests, offerings and graduations. Few flowers carry a meaning this close to the person wearing it.

  • A swallow in flight drawn in black outline, wings swept back with fine feather lines and a long forked tail.

    Swallow

Distance travelled, and coming home. Sailors wore a swallow for miles covered at sea, and because swallows do not fly far from shore, a swallow meant land was near. The meaning moved twice in the last century and the drawing stayed the same.

  • An anchor reduced to about six straight strokes, with a small open ring at the top.

    Anchor

Holding steady. The anchor began as a literal mark worn by people who worked on ships, and staying grounded through something rough is the metaphor that grew out of it.

  • A symmetrical lotus flower seen from the front in black outline, layered pointed petals above a wavy water line.

    Lotus outline

Rising out of a hard start. The lotus roots in mud and flowers clean above the water, and in Buddhism and Hinduism it stands for purity and waking up. One of the few meanings on the usual lists that is both old and still roughly what people say it is.

  • A wave drawn as four clean parallel curves, the topmost one turning over at its tip.

    Wave

Going with what comes, or the sea itself for someone from an island or a coast. A modern reading with no single tradition behind it, which suits a design this simple.

  • A range of three peaks drawn in thin black line above a straight horizon line.

    Mountain range

A climb, finished or still ahead, or a particular place. Mountains carry no fixed symbolic meaning in tattooing, so the range is usually a real one the wearer can name.

  • A slim arrow pointing up and to the right, with a solid triangular head and two leaf-shaped fletchings at the tail.

    Arrow

Moving forward, and the modern saying that an arrow has to be pulled back before it can fly, worn for a setback that came before a fresh start. The saying is recent and widely shared online rather than old.

  • A paper plane climbing away from a looping dashed trail.

    Paper plane

Travel, a leap, or a message sent to someone far away. A recent design with no tradition behind it, and a natural choice for someone leaving home to work or study.

  • Six small black dots joined by thin straight lines in a zigzag, with three small four-pointed stars around them.

    Constellation

A particular sky: a star sign, the night someone was born, or the stars over a place that matters. Constellations were named in antiquity, and wearing your own is a modern way of making them personal.

Worth knowing before you choose

Minimalist is the most searched tattoo style in the Philippines by a wide margin, and it is also the least forgiving: with six lines on the skin, every one of them is visible. Thin lines on a small piece also soften as they age, which is worth knowing before you choose the smallest version of an idea.

Or describe what you actually want

None of these has to be it. Say what is closest, what you would change, where it goes and roughly how big, and the drawing comes back before anything is booked.
