Medusa Tattoo Meaning: The Myth, and Why Survivors Wear Her

LOT 20261008 · NO 22/43 · 1382 WORDS · 6 MIN

The short answer

For many who wear her, a mark of surviving sexual assault: a woman punished for what was done to her, taken back. Protection and warning are the older readings.

The reading most people searching this are asking about

For a great many of the people who wear her, a medusa tattoo marks having survived sexual assault.

In the version of the myth most people now know, Medusa was a mortal woman who was raped by Poseidon in the temple of Athena, and it was Medusa whom Athena punished: her hair turned to snakes and her face became something nobody could look at and live. The blame landed on the person it was done to. People who have been through that choose her as a way of refusing it. The fault was never theirs, the monster story was written by somebody else, and the tattoo takes the figure back.

Some who wear her want it recognised. Some wear it for themselves and tell nobody. It is the same tattoo either way and neither one owes anybody an explanation. If you see one on somebody, assume nothing and ask nothing. If you are reading this because something happened to you and you are thinking about her, you do not have to decide anything today.

What does Medusa symbolize?

Several things, and which one depends on who is looking.

Survival, and refusing the blame. The reading above, and the one most people searching this page mean. It is recent as a tattoo convention and old as an argument.

Protection. The oldest use of her face. Greek shields, armour, temple fronts, doorways and coins carried the gorgoneion, the staring severed head, to turn harm back on whoever brought it. Athena wore it on her aegis. A medusa worn for protection is using her exactly as the Greeks did.

Anger that is allowed to be seen. Her stare is the one thing in the myth she did not ask for and the one thing that finally protected her. Many people wear it for that: the right to be frightening after years of being told to be small.

A warning. Look at her and you turn to stone. On skin it says something close to “I am not to be handled”, and some people want exactly that sentence on them.

Transformation. She was one thing and became another. It is a looser reading and a fair one.

Was Medusa evil or a victim?

The honest answer is that the Greeks and Romans did not agree, and the two main versions are both ancient.

Hesiod, around 700 BC. In the Theogony the Gorgons are three sisters, daughters of the sea gods Phorcys and Ceto. Medusa is the only mortal one. Perseus cuts off her head, and from her neck spring the winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor. There is no backstory and no punishment. She was born a Gorgon.

Ovid, AD 8. In Book Four of the Metamorphoses she begins as a woman famous for her beauty and, above everything, her hair. Neptune, the Roman Poseidon, rapes her in the temple of Minerva, the Roman Athena. Minerva, so that the act would not go unpunished, turns Medusa’s hair into snakes. Ovid writes it plainly, and he writes the injustice plainly too: the goddess punishes the woman and not the god.

Everything the survivor reading rests on is in Ovid, and it has been on the page for two thousand years. What changed recently is not the story but who decided it was theirs.

How the survivor reading took hold

The idea that Medusa was wronged and that her rage is the point has been argued for a long time. Hélène Cixous made it the title of a 1975 essay, The Laugh of the Medusa, which is still taught.

The image that moved it into public view was a sculpture. In 2008 the Argentine artist Luciano Garbati made Medusa With the Head of Perseus, which reverses the famous Renaissance statue in Florence: she stands, calm, holding his head. In October 2020 a cast of it was installed in Collect Pond Park in Manhattan, across the road from the criminal court where Harvey Weinstein had been convicted earlier that year. That placement was deliberate and widely reported.

Through 2021 the tattoo spread on social media, with people explaining why they had chosen her. By then it had stopped being a private reading and become a recognised one, which is also why a search for the meaning now turns up people who got the tattoo for the face and only found out later. That is not a mistake. It is the ordinary way a meaning becomes public.

What does the medusa tattoo mean in mental health?

It is worn by people recovering from assault, from abuse that was not sexual, and from other trauma, and the sentence underneath it is the same each time: the thing that was done to me is not who I am.

It is not a diagnosis, it does not announce one, and nobody wearing it has to tell you anything. Some people choose it after therapy, as a marker of having come out the other side. Some choose it while still in the middle, as a thing to hold on to. Both are allowed.

If the reason you are reading this is that something happened to you and it is still heavy, you do not need a tattoo to have the right to help. In the Philippines the NCMH Crisis Hotline on 1553 answers at any hour. The semicolon guide lists the mobile numbers and the date they were checked.

What does it mean if Medusa is your first tattoo?

Nothing beyond what you meant by it.

The top result for this search is a thread by somebody who got her, found out about the survivor reading afterwards, and felt terrible. That person did nothing wrong. A medusa does not say anything about your history to anyone who does not already know it, and plenty of people chose her for the myth, the protection reading, or because the face is one of the great subjects in Western art and always has been.

If you have just learned the reading and it sits comfortably, keep it. If it sits badly, the tattoo still means what you say it means. And if, having read this, you would rather it said something else, what a cover up can do and when a touch up is due are the practical pages, read without any hurry.

The other readings people bring

The art. Caravaggio painted her on a round shield in about 1597. Bernini carved her in marble around 1640, mid-transformation, more woman than monster. Cellini’s bronze Perseus has held her head up in Florence since 1554. A medusa drawn from any of these is a tattoo about the tradition as much as the myth.

The snakes. Her hair carries its own symbol, and a snake has readings of its own that do not always agree with hers. The snake, reading by reading is worth a look if the snakes are going to be a large part of the drawing.

The mirror and the shield. Perseus used a polished shield to look at her without meeting her eyes. A medusa reflected in something reads as seeing clearly what cannot be faced directly, which is a modern reading and a thoughtful one.

The blindfold, the tears, the closed eyes. All recent designs. The blindfold and the closed eyes are usually read as refusing to use the stare, or as the harm being over. The tears are grief. None of these has an old source and each is a decision rather than a tradition.

Drawing her

A face is the hardest thing to tattoo small. Expression lives in a few lines around the eyes and mouth, and those lines spread as the years pass, so a medusa the size of a coin turns into a smudge with snakes around it. Most are done at a size that fills an outer thigh, an upper arm, a shoulder blade, a forearm or a calf, and those are the middling rows of the pain chart rather than the sharp end.

There is no gallery of her on this site, on purpose. She is drawn from a conversation about which version you mean, and that conversation is yours to start when you want to, or not at all.

Common questions

What does a medusa tattoo mean?
For many of the people who wear her, it marks having survived sexual assault: in the myth she was punished for what was done to her, and the tattoo takes her back. The older readings, protection and a warning to whoever is looking, are still in use, and some people choose her for the story or the face alone.
Was Medusa evil or a victim?
It depends which ancient author you read. In Hesiod she is simply born a Gorgon and killed by Perseus. In Ovid she was a woman famed for her beauty, raped by the sea god in Athena's temple, and it was Medusa whom Athena punished. The second version is the one behind the survivor reading, and it is two thousand years old.
What does the medusa tattoo mean in mental health?
It is worn by people recovering from assault, abuse and other trauma as a way of saying the thing done to them is not who they are. It is not a diagnosis and it does not announce one. Nobody wearing it owes anyone an explanation.
What does it mean if medusa is your first tattoo?
Nothing beyond what you meant by it. Plenty of people chose her for the myth, the face or the snakes before they knew the survivor reading existed. If you have just learned it and it sits badly, the tattoo still means what you say it means, and nobody can read your history off your arm.
Is it disrespectful to get a medusa tattoo if you are not a survivor?
No. The survivor reading is one meaning among several and it belongs to the people who choose it, which does not take the figure away from anyone else. The one thing worth doing is knowing the reading exists, so that you are not surprised when someone assumes it.
What does a crying medusa tattoo mean?
Grief for what she lost, usually. It is a modern design rather than an old image, and it puts the weight on the woman she was before rather than on the stare. People read it as sorrow, as survival with the cost showing, or simply as the face they wanted.
